Did they fly the whole trip at that low of an altitude back in the day? It is always interesting seeing these photos of old airliners because you get the sense that they are flying through the city, not over it.

God those DC's were beautiful planes. I do miss seeing them fly up in Alaska.

I really don't have any idea. This was probably a photo op, since the source caption indicates that an almost similar photo was published, presumably in Life Magazine. It was taken by Margaret Bourke-White .

Here's a Berlin Airlift C-54 I had the opportunity to see (and take a terrible picture of) at Oshkosh 2010.

Kinja'd!!!

That year they also had a couple other rarities; a DC-2 and a DC-7.

The back of the DC-7 had this little "lounge".

Prior to pressurization airliners flew low enough that we'd think they were going to crash today. 8000 ft was a high cruise and they'd rarely top 10k ft unless they were crossing mountains. If you look up the maximum ceiling of those designed in the 1930ish time frame you'll see them listed at >20k but they weren't meant for normal operation up there. They were designed to work that high so that they could also be sold into military service and operate over the Himalayas and what have you in case another global war broke out.

One of these days I'm going to do an article about the Airlift and Templehoff.

Forget the lounge - look at that head room! It seems so much taller than anything out there now.

I supposed that's what it'd be like if you took out the overhead bins.

I used to hate pooping in public.

You know the feeling

Nothing is worse that stinking up the toilet at work, or the toilet at a party, or your lover's apartment

^^ Not sure how that helps.
